FREE CREDIT REPORTS UNTIL APRIL 20, 2022

Equifax, Experian and Trans Union Offering Free Credit Reports

The Big 3 nationwide consumer reporting agencies are offering free credit reports to consumers through April 20, 2022. The announcement was made by the Consumer Data Industry Association in a statement yesterday. This is good news to consumers because the offering will give consumers free access to their credit reports on a weekly basis.

Currently, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) gives consumers the right to one free annual disclosure (credit report). More frequent access will give consumers greater access to their credit files. Consumers may request their free credit reports from Equifax, Experian and Trans Union at the official free credit report website www.annualcreditreport.com. It isn’t clear whether Equifax, Experian and Trans Union are offering the same free credit report offer by mail or phone. Time will tell. Credit Report Errors

According to the Federal Trade Commission study, one in five consumers has a material error on one of their credit reports. That means 20% of all Americans who have a credit file have inaccurate information on their credit report! Credit report errors can lower credit scores and prevent consumers from getting credit, jobs or housing.

Consumers who have credit report errors should dispute any inaccurate information to the credit bureaus. The dispute should be made by certified mail and include any supporting documents. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires the credit bureaus, such as Equifax, Experian and Trans Union, to delete or reinvestigate any disputed items of information. The FCRA also provides for a private cause of action against the credit bureaus for failing to comply with the federal law.
